As a famous song goes, diamonds are forever, forever, forever! But it doesn't mean you won't clean them anymore. Diamonds and other jewelry pieces need to be cleaned regularly so as to keep their brilliance and sparkle. Sweat, oil, chemicals like soap and lotion, and other substances can diminish the clarity of your pieces in time. So to prevent this, you have to regularly clean them. Below are some ways to clean your diamonds and other jewelry pieces.
Remember, you don't have to wear your jewelry all the time, especially if they're diamonds. And mostly, if you're going to do some heavy, physical stuff. It might damage your jewelry and chip the stone itself. Only wear your jewelry pieces on special occasions. Not when you're doing domestic stuff (errands, dishwashing, etc.). When not in use, store them in a pouch made of cloth so as not to scratch the gem. If you have a separate box for your diamonds, better!
Ways of cleaning your diamond (choose which is effective for you):
1. Soft polish: clean and polish your diamond piece with a soft cloth to preserve its luster and shine.
2. Soak in warm water - in a bowl filled with 1 part mild liquid detergent and 4 parts warm water, soak your diamond jewelry. Brush it with a soft brush (an eyebrow brush is recommended). Rinse in tap water, air dry or dry it with a lint-free soft cloth.
3. Use commercial cleaning solutions which are available in department stores or pharmacies. They usually come with a brush and a cleaning cloth. Follow the instructions.
4. Use ultrasonic cleaners. Ultrasonic cleaners use wavelengths to clean your diamond piece. These wavelengths are sent through the water or liquid substance without direct contact to the jewelry, thereby avoiding damage in the process. These cleaners are also available in the market. Make sure though that your diamond piece have been soaked in warm water before subjecting it to ultrasonic cleaning because the change in temperature might damage it.
5. Use steam cleaners. These are used by professional cleaners, but for your information, steam cleaning is a method that removes stubborn dirt and stains by use of steam. Bring your diamond piece to a jeweler first and ask if the piece needs to be steam cleaned.
6. Boiling. An unconventional but effective way of cleaning your jewelry is boiling. Not advisable for all gemstones except the following: diamonds, rubies, sapphires, topaz, jade and quartz. Do this process as your last recourse, though.
