Jewellery is something that will always be sought after. Choosing the pieces is part of the fun of jewellery shopping, there are various to select from. Amongst the age-old questions people face when shopping is, what's best: silver or gold jewellery? Everyone has different tastes, however there are various things which can be considered when deciding on silver or gold.

The most important factor to consider is cost. At the moment, gold is valued very highly. It is expensive to buy, but also valuable to have for the purpose of reselling at a later date. Historically, though, silver has a higher price ratio of about 10:1 to gold. The majority of silver that is mined is utilized for industry. If demand for silver were to increase, it could cause prices to quickly increase.

The second thing to consider is complexion. Various skin types can appear better when wearing certain metals. People have either warm, cool, or more neutral undertones. Warm tones are more yellow, cool undertones are bluer, and those with neutral tones look good with warmer or cooler colours. Designer silver jewellery usually looks best on cool undertones whereas gold compliments warmer skin tones. Those with neutral undertones can wear either. It's really simple to find out which is best for you. Take turns holding a silver piece of jewellery up to your complexion and then a gold piece of jewellery. Whichever seems to stand out more is the metal that complements your skin tone.

The third thing to consider is whether your skin might react to certain metals. For silver, there are many points for consideration. For starters, silver jewellery could become tarnished which might then trigger skin reactions. However, sterling silver is 92.5% pure, which is considered very good. Most people don't have a problem with modern day sterling silver jewellery because of the high purity level. Older silver alloys might be less pure and could contain certain metals which may trigger a skin reaction, this is something to always be aware of if choosing antique jewellery. 24K gold jewellery is recognized as hypoallergenic, any carats below that are alloys and may therefore cause skin reactions.

Deciding what jewellery to choose invariably comes down to personal opinion. But, all these important factors are worthy of consideration. It allows this question to be easily answered!
