Charm bracelets are once again considered fashionable jewellery. While these bracelets have been around for a long time, the significance behind charm collecting has transformed over the years. In wartime, armed forces would bring home charms as a keepsake for their sweethearts. These charms were made by a locals and displayed as a souvenir of soldiers' tour of duty. By the 1950s charm bracelets had become the it-thing with children. They enjoyed collecting charms to represent various scenarios and special occasions that took place as they were growing up.

However, the most recent embodiment of charm bracelets appear to have been largely developed in Europe. It was the Danish company Trollbeads that brought about the revival that occurred in the nineteen seventies. These later bracelets featured a modular build. This meant that beads and charms had been produced to work with a particular threaded system. This system was exclusive to one particular make. By way of example, Pandora, another jeweller from Denmark, has a copyrighted model and so their charms cannot work with competitors' bracelets. These systems also guarantee that charms can fit correctly onto their specially designed bracelet, allowing the charms can be mixed and matched within their own brand.

Aside from that, many charm providers create supplementary spacers or clips. A clip does not contain a thread like a charm does. Instead it has a hinge which lets it clamp over the bracelet. These clips can be used as a technique of dividing up charms and stopping them from moving up and down the bracelet. Similar companies who use threading systems throughout their bracelet development include Blog by Aagaard, Chamilia and OHM.

Even though most charm manufacturers come from Europe, the concept of charm jewellery is becoming increasingly popular in North America and Australasia. The principal lure of these more sophisticated charm ranges is the overall flexibility they give the customer. The old fashioned chain links charm bracelet is still available, but this can only take a limited selection of dangling charms. The snake chain bracelet is the most popular charm bracelet now and is commonly available in gold and silver.

Charms are also available in many different materials. The price these charms retail at will vary depending on what they are made from. Sterling silver is the most common, but you can now also find wood charms, murano glass charms, charms with enamel detail and charms made with 14k gold.
