Contemplating of popping the big question real soon would mean thinking of how much should you be shelling out for an engagement ring. As a general rule, an engagement should be equivalent to two months of your paycheck. Ever wonder if that really is something you should be following?

You don't have to, if you ask me! Two months' worth of your salary is just too much money to set aside. This old practice is not just possible especially for young couples who are just starting out. In this day and age, most of us graduated from college with hefty student salary loans. Costs of living is just too expensive that we're left with no choice but to move back in with our parents.

An engagement ring, in essence, should be more meaningful than it is expensive. Find a ring that is within your budget. Don't scrimp on your ring as this is something that will represent a milestone in both your lives. How much you will be spending on an engagement ring will depend entirely up to you. Since you eventually will have joint bank accounts, the engagement ring choice should be both yours. Make sure that your fiance will be willing to help pay off her own engagement ring had you chosen a very expensive one. Most likely she won't be that excited to pay off her own ring. The less you owe when you're married, the better.

Once you have decided how much to spend for the ring, take the 80/20 rule into account. what this means is a bulk of your budget is allocated for the stone and the rest for the setting. what your bride wants, she gets. But if your bride likes a more garish stone, then spend more on the stone. But if she cares more a setting that really sparkles, then got for a smaller diamond with a more intricate setting. Keep in my mind, that you still have wedding rings to spend for. These can now be simpler or ornate, depending on your style and your budget.
